PCSO Mission: Education, Advocacy and Communications
The Pacific Coast Society of Orthodontists is a professional organization of orthodontic specialists whose mission is to help its members provide the highest level of care to the public by providing quality continuing education, providing a framework for a strong political voice, and facilitating two-way communications between the organization and its members.
This statement begins the PCSO Strategic Plan.
Education, advocacy, and communications. PCSO volunteers and staff spend their time and resources on programs that address these major PCSO goal areas.
Education
Through the Annual Session, Regional meetings, and articles in the PCSO Bulletin, PCSO works to bring the best and brightest educators to the membership.
The Annual Session typically attracts from 25 to 50 percent of the membership and a larger number of orthodontic staff.
Regional meetings are held several times each year in Southern and Central California and the Northwest.
Company representatives offering orthodontic supplies and services are usually present at all meetings, which allow for on-site examination of products. Members registration fees are lower than those for non-members.
A small committee and continuing education consultant are reviewing all PCSO educational programs and expect to make recommendations to the Board of Directors this year.
Periodically, we offer an ABO Phase III Preparation Course, open to all AAO members considering ABO status. Several PCSO members develop and present the course, usually scheduled during the annual session.
The PCSO Bulletin, one of only a handful of orthodontic journals, has been published since the early 1900s. A typical issue will carry reviews of recent regional meeting and/or annual session presentations, a professional portrait of a member, an entry in the practice management journal, a before and after case review, and the New Member Forum.
Members receive a Bulletin subscription as part of their membership.
Advocacy
Most national policy is set by the American Association of Orthodontists House of Delegates. As the largest of the AAO constituent societies, PCSO has the largest delegation to the AAO House, with nine of the 50 voting members.
Each year during the AAO Annual Session, our delegation presents resolutions for consideration, lobbies other delegations to support our issues, and uses our numbers to influence matters important to the membership.
In addition, one PCSO member serves on all AAO Councils, which carry out the work as dictated by the House. During the year, various AAO committees and task forces are appointed, usually with at least one PCSO member.
Most dental laws and regulations are administered by individual states and provinces. PCSO leaves the task of advocating at this level up to the component societies.
Communications
We are fortunate to have had members with the foresight to establish the PCSO Bulletin as the primary communications tool.
Since early in the century, it has been mailed to PCSO members as part of their membership. The journal is used to provide scientific information and the PCSO business items important to the society.
With wider Internet use by members, we expect to see less reliance on the Bulletin and more interest in using the PCSO Web site (www.pcsortho.org).
Future plans for the site include online education and a reference library of PCSO documents, among others.
See the new Classifieds section of the Web site, which is a service available to PCSO members only.
It is also expected that the Web site will encourage members to provide more feedback on PCSO programs.
